The K-state fishing club is once again holding it’s annual musky lures competition this Spring. Continue reading to learn how you can participate.
As many of you know the K-state fishing club fishes year round for various fresh water fish. From ice fishing in the winter to bass fishing in the summer. However, our team anglers consistently tell us that their favorite fish of all is the musky. Nothing compares to the giant, toothy freshwater critters that can top 50 inches and 40 pounds.
That’s why each Spring we hold our annual musky lures competition here on campus. Our aim is to see which students can come up with the most innovative and effective musky lures. This fun and engaging competition is always a hit with students.
Musky Lures Types
In case you have never fished for muskies, then you should first know that there are several different categories of musky lures for fishing muskies. Each has their own unique purpose, depending on water conditions and other factors. In order to give you inspiration for your competition submission, let’s briefly take a look at a couple of them
Glide Baits
Glide baits are exactly what they sound like. They tend to glide gracefully through the water without much commotion. They can be worked in various way, either fast or slow. The magic of glide baits when fishing for muskies comes in when the angler asserts “action” onto the lure. This is usually some type of side to side motion, which is very effective at triggering musky strikes.
Plastic Musky Lures
Plastic musky baits tend to be larger and have a rubbery feel to them. They are often on the heavier side and tend to sink further down than glide baits. They also tend to have long squiggly tails, which gives them a very realistic look when pulled through the water. Plastic baits come in various sizes, shapes, and colors.
Spinners & Bucktails
Perhaps the most popular type of musky lures, spinners and bucktails have been used for muskie fishing for decades. They consist of one or two spinner blades followed by a feathery tail. The blades provide great visual and audio attraction that muskies seem to love. These baits have been effective since the dawn of musky fishing and continue to be angler favorites.
Competition
The musky lures competition runs through April 30th each year.
